Students in Mrs. Samstag's life science class designed experiments to determine the effects of various stimuli on heart rate. Some submerged their heads in ice cold water while others performed the valsalva maneuver (holding their breath). One group inverted their bodies to determine the effects of gravity. Mr. Garrison and Mr. Little even joined in for a little friendly competition to see who could hold their head longer under ice cold water. After their experiments were completed, students graphed their data and analyzed their results in the computer lab.

| State Superintendent’s Writing Award Peyton Finley |
Peyton recently joined all 8th grade students in participating in the State Superintendent’s Writing Award program. Students write in class and adhere closely to the Revised Extended Response Writing Rubric that is used to score PASS testing each year. The topic this year was People’s Influence on Other Living Things. Judging first occurs at the classroom level and then all class winners are judged at the school level by a panel of judges. Peyton took top honors for McCants. The three Anderson 5 middle school winners will represent their school at the district competition. Good luck, Peyton!
